Which Depth of Coir Matting Should I Choose?
When you are looking for your perfect entrance matting, you want to make sure you get everything just right. Knowing your mat is going to fit is just as important as knowing how effectively the mat can remove dirt from your shoes and keep your floors clean.
We get a lot of questions about which thickness of entrance mat we would recommend, and so we thought it was time we created a one-stop guide to help choose the right depth for you.
Door Clearance
Door clearance is an important factor when picking an entrance mat. As much as you want to prioritize a mat's aesthetic appeal, you need to know your door will still be able to open.
If your door clearance is very low, it will also be worth checking the floor surface with a spirit level to make sure the floor doesn't have any irregularities that will cause the door to catch the mat.
Coir Mats for Mat Wells
If you are looking to buy coir matting for indoor use in a mat well or recess, we recommend our cut to size range of PVC Backed Coir mats. These entrance mats can be cut to custom sizes and to a bespoke template. You can find more on this in our previous blog: Do You Need An Irregular-Shaped Coir Mat?
Measuring Depth.
To measure the depth of your mat well, you need to measure from the base to the lip. As most of our matting thicknesses are measured in mm, it’s a good idea to take the measurement of your mat well recess in mm as well.
We usually find the flexibility of a tape measure helps when measuring a recess from the bottom to the lip of the surrounding floor so your mat fits flush with the floor.
To ensure you pick a good fit for your entrance mat well, you will want the mat's thickness to be within a milometer of the depth of the mat well to avoid potential tripping hazards.
If your mat well is too deep to do this, then we suggest cutting down a piece of plywood or a similar material of the necessary thickness to fill the remaining depth.

Other Materials
Our synthetic mats offer a sustainable flooring solution for indoor and outdoor use. Synthetic mat materials are thinner better for outdoor use as they are non biodegradable and non shedding.
Our soft man made, coarse man made, and ribbed man made matting come at 9 mm thickness, and our All Weather Made to Measure Doormats are 5 mm thickness.
Oddly Shaped Mat Wells
Our PVC backed matting can also be cut to an Irregular Shape for a 30% surcharge, catering for mat wells of all shapes and sizes. and for mat wells that are far from a regular shape, our PVC backed products can be trimmed down on site with a Sharp utility knife, simply order a few millimetres oversize and you'll have plenty to work with when you go trim it down.
Free Standing mats
For loose laid and free standing mats, our Standard Coir Mats range from 20mm - 50mm thickness in 5mm increments.
Our Rubber mats come at 10mm thickness.
For our other standard sized products, any latex or PVC backing is always included in the mats thickness
For free standing mats of under 10 mm thickness, it would be best to for synthetic materials like our All Weather Made to Measure Doormats which measure 5 mm thickness and can be made with a rubber boarder when used free standing, which will be accounted for in your provided dimensions.
We don't recommend PVC Backed coir for free standing use as these mats do not have a finished edge, and can shed along the edge as they become compressed with use.
For made to measure free standing coir mats, our Bespoke Hand Made Coir Door Mat is available at 25 mm, 30 mm, 35 mm and 40 mm. This mat is hand woven with natural coconut fibres.
