A Bespoke Hand Made Coir Doormat - rolled up and ready to go

In the pursuit of environmentally conscious living, individuals and businesses are increasingly turning to sustainable alternatives for everyday products.

Crafted from coconut husks, coconut mats, commonly known as coir doormats are a popular choice of entrance mats due to their versatility, durability, and eco-friendly properties.

The husk of coconuts is usually waste material and disposed of, so taking the husk of the coconut, spinning it into yarn and then weaving this together to create coir matting is reusing material that would normally go to landfill, starting on the path of a more environmentally friendly living.

Let's explore the eco-friendly advantages of coconut mats and their role in promoting a greener future in today's world.

What are the benefits of coconut mats?

Renewable Resource

Perhaps the most important green advantage of coir mats is that they harness a renewable resource – coconuts are plentiful in the tropics and their husks easily yield coir fibres.

This sustainable method doesn’t involve cutting down trees, so they are allowed to continue producing fruit, thus reducing pressure on natural ecosystems, with less deforestation, so biodiversity in coconut-growing regions is also preserved.

Biodegradability

Unlike rubber or plastic, coconut mats are biodegradable, meaning that at the end of their lifecycle, they will naturally decompose without harming the environment.

Made from robust natural fibres, the coir mats biodegrade over time into soil nutrients, and they are also a waste-free product that cuts down on receptacles for landfill waste. So once, your 100% coir doormat is no longer fit for use, simply place it on your compost bin to degrade.

Low Environmental Footprint

Coconut mats have a much lower carbon footprint than other materials, as the process used to produce them requires a little more energy than that already expended in the extraction of their coir fibres. The harvesting of coir fibres usually occurs manually or with the help of simple machinery, none of which demands much energy or produces great quantities of rubbish.

In addition, coconut mats are usually made with traditional, low-carbon footprint techniques that makes them very resource-efficient and without harmful chemicals or synthetic additives. For these reasons, coconut mats are a plant-based and, more generally, more eco-friendly alternative to plastic or other materials.

Versatile Applications

Apart from the environmental benefits that coir mats provide, their versatility with a wide range of applications makes them an excellent choice for any residential and commercial application.

Are coir mats eco-friendly?

Our woven backed standard coco coir doormats or Bespoke Hand Made Coir Doormat are made from woven coir backing. This is the coconut husk that is spun into twine, it is then woven on a large loom to create the base of the coir doormats.

Our Standard mats are then finished with either a braided edge, which again is made from coir twine or they have a latex edge finish, again making these mats completely eco-friendly and are great at removing stubborn dirt from the bottom of shoes before entering the home.

Our Bespoke Hand Made Coir Mats have the same woven backing as the standard mats. The finished edges of these mats are made from twine. These eco-friendly products are great for any eco-conscious person using natural materials but with the full functionality that is expected of a doormat; trapping dirt from heavy foot traffic.

What are the pros and cons of coir mats?

100% Coir Doormats are made from genuine coconut fibres which means they have their pros but also their cons.

Benefits of a coir doormat

  • Eco friendliness
  • Natural fibres
  • Bristley strong fibres
  • Withstand heavy foot traffic
  • Removal of dirt and moisture from the bottom of shoes
  • A great natural look for home décor

Cons of coir mats

  • Made from natural fibres so will degrade over time
  • Not for use outdoors and directly exposed to the elements. Coir is a great water absorbent so it will hold on to any water, making the natural fibres degrade quicker.
  • All coir mats will initially shead but this will die down over the first week. Simply pick the mat up and give it a shake to dislodge any loose fibres. Or if the mat is too large or heavy then vacuum with an upholstery attachment.
